Tennis is normally a civilised sport with crowds appreciating all good play.
Yes, uncalled for barracking of players is disgraceful wherever it happens. Particularly at self appointed bastions of civility like centre court Wimbledon or the Long Room at Lords

I imagine you will find in Australia that THAT crowd behaviour towards Djokovic results from Croatian and Serbian fans clashing as they often do at football matches in Melbourne particularly

Got a couple of tickets this year through the ballot, not the public one but the one for members of tennis clubs. Super day out, Pimm's and a pint of Stella £18 plus Court 2 tickets £75 each, reckon I might go for a ground pass next year.

It's just a fairly niche sport over here, probably seen a a bit upper class, and it's hard for a lot of kids to get into.

What you really need is parents who are really into it and have the means to allow you to play, and then of course there's just plain old talent. Good coaching can only take you so far.

You'd hardly say the Americans or Australians are lacking in funds or opportunity but neither of those countries has produced a male grand slam winner for 20 years. France hasn't done it for 40 years.

The last Spaniards to win Wimbledon before Alcaraz were Nadal and then you have to go back to 1966 when Manuel Santana won, I was ballboy in that year but not unfortunately on Santana's court, I was on Billie Jean's court though.

Re: Why no Wimbledon thread?
Most of the top Women players are from Eastern Europe where they have harsh winters so I'm not sure the weather argument holds true.

There was a women on 5live Friday morning from the LTA being interviewed by Adrian Chiles and there are lots of things they are doing to try and attract more youngsters into the game but they're in competition will loads of other sports so it's difficult to attract the numbers. To say it's played by a load of hurray Henries is a load of bollocks.

Article from The Australian Open earlier this year:

“Novak Djokovic and his fans have been angered by the amount of abuse he has received throughout the Australian Open and there were even more frustration on show during his semi final win over Tommy Paul.”

“Djokovic’s matches have been the main source of disruptions. The nine time Australian champion lost his cool and urged the umpire to kick out the spectators who were hounding him throughout the match”

Bloody Australians. Their attitude towards Djokovic is disgraceful. Isn’t that right Sven?

Yes...your experience at a local tennis club is definitely a barometer of why we don't produce many good players

Re: Why no Wimbledon thread?
If the BBC didn't spend £60millions on blanket coverage of Wimbledon across its two channels, the public would largely be unaware of tennis as a sport.

I used to belong to a tennis and squash club where I mostly played squash all year round. It became difficult to find changing room space in June and July every year. The June/July tennis players disappeared as soon as Wimbledon was over and forgotten about.

Top class tennis is a game that needs to be played all year around by youngsters to develop into top players. That's why most of the worlds top players come from countries with much better weather than UK...

I have you down as more of a rugger man. Fat blokes in tight shorts drinking their own piss more your game.

I'm digging out Wimbledon for their stewardship of tennis
I see an English kid won the boys singles for the first time in 61 years.
What have they been doing with all the money?
At least with the Premier league all the foreign stars have lifted the standard of English players.

Of all the up and comers in the last 5 plus years ALCARAZ looks like the first in the class of the big 4 who have dominated mens tennis for 20 years.
The likes of Ruud, Rune, Tsitsipas, Sinner etc need to step up or we will be in a Sampras type era with one dominant player once Djokovic finishes.

Watching tennis is generally crap, but occasionally you will see a match that you can only watch and admire as two warriors slug it out like their life's depend on it, seen it a few times down the years and there aren't many better spectacles in sport.

I didn't see this and feel like I've missed out. Good to see a new champ and as said looks like he could dominate the game now, although Djokovic isn't finished yet by a long chalk.

On another note, no one still not seen Gary?
